Digital Dialogue — Listening Well
by Andreas Ernst

What makes media effective? The biennial Bible Translation Conference is sponsored by Dallas International University and SIL International. This year’s conference on October 15-19, will be online only.

It would be great if Media Services could be represented at the conference, not just as attendees, but also as presenters.

The theme of this year’s conference is Paradigms of Bible Translation: Mission, Goals, and Assumptions.

According to the conference website: “Different communities and individuals may have different expectations with regard to what Bible translation is and how it should be done. Sometimes these differences lead to misunderstanding, distrust, lack of collaboration, or even controversy."

“The theme ‘Paradigms of Bible Translation’ intends to deepen our understanding of translation principles and practices that are followed by translation practitioners from different backgrounds. It aims to build mutual understanding and a higher degree of consensus regarding best practices in Bible translation. The presentations are expected to foster constructive dialogue and avoid judgmental criticism of other positions.”

Conference sub-themes include:

  • History of Bible translation

  • The theory & practice of Bible translation today (includes theology, contextualization)

  • Training & mentoring

  • Technology & innovation

  • Scripture engagement & media (includes orality) (highlight mine)

  • Partnering, funding, recruitment & management related to Bible translation

  • Francophone Translation Track

One of the most relevant questions for discussion at the conference is:
How does Bible translation relate to Scripture engagement, media, technology, linguistics, anthropology?

If you would like to have a go at presenting on a particular topic please send an abstract to the conference organisers. For more information see the following link: https://www.btconference.org/for-abstracts

The deadline for submitting an abstract is the 7th of May. I look forward to seeing you there!
