New Spreadsheet for Estimating Recording and Editing Times
By John Gieske
Recording time estimates in the Essential Audio Recording Scripts (EARS) are a good starting point, but I've found that many factors can make the same book take longer in one language than in another. This new spreadsheet allows me to adjust recording time estimates for each language that I work with.
I then added a sheet to estimate how long editing and mastering will take, either for a single-voice narration or for a multivoice dramatization. There is also the option to indicate what percentage of a recording will be done in-studio and how much will be recorded in a remote location. The final calculations allow me to give both time and cost estimates to language teams who need to complete their 3-year budgets.
I realize that parts of this spreadsheet are specific to my situation. For that reason I've made notes so you can easily modify the formulae to suit your work.
